Reinsurance: Facultative 2008 Reinsurance Power Brokers

Mark Leon Maritzen
Managing Director
Guy Carpenter & Co.
New York

Mark Leon Maritzen's strong suit in international activity made him particularly valuable to clients in the globally turbulent year of 2007.

Maritzen, currently based in New York, previously worked for Marsh in New York and Zurich; Sedgwick International in Cologne, Germany; and Gerling Insurance Co. in Cologne.

In 2007, his ability to creatively find ways to access new reinsurance capacity around the world included making inroads in the Chinese market. In addition to coming up with creative ways to develop new market capacity last year, Maritzen also has been involved in developing facultative facilities so as to provide competitive solutions for cedents, which, based on business development plans, are not yet willing to buy treaties.

"This may be due to numerous reasons, among them not yet having the premium volumes in new lines of business to justify treaty costs or that they are not yet 100-percent certain on the usage requirements and consequently do not want to be burdened with initial capital outlays and would prefer a 'pay as you go' option," says Maritzen.

Maritzen stresses the importance of simplifying the issues his clients face.
