Technology 2009 Power Brokers

             2009 Power Broker® Winners
Joseph B. Inge
Managing Director
Arthur J. Gallagher, San Francisco
Joe_Inge@AJG.com

A Treasured Broker

Joseph Inge, managing director at Arthur J. Gallagher in San Francisco, wins praise from clients for being a highly effective broker.

"Joe Inge just gets it done," said one technology risk manager. "He develops effective plans and strategies and implements them very effectively. Joe manages a high-caliber team and the results of our directors' and officers' program have been phenomenal."

Besides being highly effective, Inge is also noted among clients for his focus on providing top-notch customer service. "His responsiveness and commitment to customer service is second to none," the risk manager said.

Another technology risk manager credits Inge for helping to restructure the company's global insurance program.

"He has done a phenomenal job of helping us to restructure our global insurance program, resulting in improved coverage at a lower cost," the risk manager said. "In more than 20 years of treasury management, he's the most effective broker I've worked with."

Before moving to Gallagher five years ago, Inge was a senior vice president at Marsh, where he worked for six years.

Because technology changes so rapidly, companies struggle with their risk exposures and how to communicate those exposures to insurance companies. Inge sees a crucial part of his job as educating customers on the best way to communicate these risk exposures.

Janice B. Kellogg, CIC
Senior Vice President
Wells Fargo Insurance Services, San Francisco
JBK@abdi.com

This Broker Ain't No Flake

Janice Kellogg, senior vice president for Wells Fargo Insurance Services, has won a reputation among clients as a hard-working, creative broker focused on providing excellent customer service.

"She has an excellent reputation, and she's a very sharp woman," said one technology risk manager. "She's a very strong broker."

Another risk manager said working with Kellogg and her team has been a privilege, adding that the team is loaded with "bright, experienced, responsive and creative thinkers."

"I can depend on them to anticipate issues that may impact my company and to take a fresh approach to risk problems that (we) encounter," said the risk manager.

In addition, Kellogg's team provides a highly dependable backstop for overworked risk managers, the risk manager said.

"I have every confidence in their ability and rely on them to a great degree since my team is minuscule. While I know many other capable insurance brokers from being on the broker side myself for many years, I think I have the best team there."

Kellogg started at ABD 10 years ago, before the firm was acquired by Wells Fargo. Prior to that she was a senior vice president at Minet Insurance Services, and a founder of Compro Insurance Services.

Before venturing into insurance, Kellogg was a teacher where she learned to explain complex issues in layman's terms. This has helped her make international insurance and risk management concepts and solutions more understandable to clients.

Kevin P. Kalinich
National Managing Director
Aon, Chicago
Kevin_Kalinich@ars.aon.com

The K-Plan Broker

Kevin Kalinich is well-known and well-respected, particularly among companies working in areas where technology and finance intersect.

"Kevin has an amazing grasp of the legal issues involved with technology insurance," said one risk manager. "He can quickly identify issues that should be important for the company and for the underwriters and develop a strategy to get the best outcome for the clients."

Another risk manger cites Kalinich's knowledge and expertise in errors and omissions coverage, his ability to execute and his tenacity.

"I've met many E&O brokers, and none is as impressive as Kevin," the risk manager said. "Some are equally knowledgeable, but lack his aggressiveness. And others have his aggressiveness but aren't as knowledgeable.

"We had a challenging renewal this past year and when we met to begin planning the renewal, he came prepared to address all of my concerns," the risk manager said. "Some brokers will prepare a Plan B. Kevin will have fully developed a Plan C, a Plan D and a maybe even a Plan E--contingencies that even I had not thought of."

The risk manager described Kalinich as "meticulous and passionate" on behalf of clients. When it comes to negotiations with underwriters, Kalinich is a real pit bull, unafraid of letting go--until the other side yields.

Kalinich, who has been with Aon for eight years, is also a lawyer and clients cite that legal expertise as another strength of his.

Mary M. Rosbarsky
Vice President
Marsh, San Francisco
mary.rosbarsky@marsh.com

No Change Needed

Mary Rosbarsky, vice president with Marsh in San Francisco, has built a strong reputation among clients in a short time.

"She has continued to positively and pleasantly surprise me. Even though she's relatively young, she seems to be beyond her years in experience," said a risk manager at a large technology company, who credits Rosbarsky for her ability to work with senior management. "She presents herself very well, not only to me, but also to the CFO and senior staff."

Rosbarsky, who has been with Marsh for five years, also wins praise for gaining a detailed understanding of clients' businesses and their exposures.

"She has taken the time to learn quite a bit about the company," the risk manager said. "She has really been good at understanding where the holes and exposures in our risk management environment are and understanding the whole world is not about insurance," he said, adding that she's been skilled at coming up with creative solutions.

"She ends up coming through time and time again," the risk manager said.

Rosbarsky shows a dedication to client service, the importance of which has been magnified by the financial tumult in both the insurance industry and in the industries served by big, complex insurance programs.

"She has served us considerably well, and I've been asked by my chairman of the board if there is a need for a change, and I emphatically say 'No.' "

Chad Scheller, ARM
Senior Vice President
Marsh, San Jose, Calif.
Chad.Scheller@Marsh.com

Sun Alum's Enlightened Edge

Chad Scheller, senior vice president for Marsh, brings a bona fide technology background to the table for his clients. Before bolting for the brokerage giant seven years ago, he was assistant risk manager at Sun Microsystems.

This experience provided him with a unique perspective to help understand his clients' specific technology risks as well as to allow him to effectively communicate complex insurance and risk management solutions in terms that are familiar to his technology clients.

"He brings in a lot of experience," said one technology risk manager, who credits Scheller for a forward-looking approach to renewals to get carrier buy-in beforehand and avoid last minute problems.

"It's really trying to drive the leverage back to me," the risk manager said. "Using this kind of strategy is very valuable to (our) company."

Another technology risk manager cites Scheller for developing alternatives and helping to save money while not losing ground on coverage.

"He's done a fantastic job," the risk manager said. "We're all looking to save money, and at the same time. He's done a great job for us. We had a reduction in our premium, while increasing some items on our directors' and officers' side. We couldn't be happier."

Thomas A. Whitenight
Senior Vice President, Producer
Wells Fargo Insurance Services
Redwood City, Calif.
TAW@abdi.com

A White Knight's Bright Lights

Thomas Whitenight, senior vice president with Wells Fargo Insurance Services, wins raves from clients for customer service, knowledge of the technology industry and a dedication to getting the right coverage at the right price.

One technology risk manager who had moved to a new company, said he brought in Whitenight and his team to replace their former broker last year.

"I switched this past summer and couldn't be happier," the risk manager said, adding that Whitenight and his team provided a higher level of service, were more technologically adept, delved deeper into the company's program to find potential savings and enabled the company to obtain better coverage at a lower cost.

Another technology risk manager said that Whitenight is "among the best, most supportive and knowledgeable insurance brokers we've had the pleasure of working with."

"They have accommodated our company throughout its evolution, creatively and proactively customizing our insurance program at every turn," the risk manager said. "They are able to provide expert benchmarking and guidance due to their industry expertise, while always conducting themselves with the highest standards of ethical conduct."

"He understands the business and makes salient recommendations on the types and levels of insurance coverage that our company should carry," another technology risk manager said.
