Why You Can Patent Business Decisions
Business methods used to not be patentable. At least that's what people thought before the 1998 State Street Decision. The court case, State Street Bank v. Signature Financial Group Inc., opened the floodgates to the patenting of business methods, especially in industries where a significant portion of the business is transaction or service-oriented like online businesses, financial services and insurance firms, and software companies.
