Swiss Re appointed Stefan Lippe as deputy CEO, effective Sept. 1. Lippe, currently head of (Re)Insurance Products, will succeed Andreas Beerli as chief operating officer, who will retire mid 2009. In his new positions, he will oversee such activities as global IT, Group Technical Accounting & Services, Claims and Liability Management, Group Legal, Group Logistics, and Product Development & Strategy. Lippe has 25 years of experience at Swiss Re.
Swiss Re also appointed Brian Gray chief underwriting officer and member of the Executive Committee, effective Sept. 1 as well. Gray is currently head of Property & Specialty Underwriting.
Swiss Re also named Walter A. Bell as chairman of Swiss Re America Holding Corp. Bell, whose appointment with Swiss Re is effective Sept. 2, is currently insurance commissioner of the Alabama Department of Insurance, a position he has held since 2003. Bell will provide supervisory governance of the Americas businesses for Swiss Re.
Atradius appointed PETER SCHMIDT to the position of chief market officer responsible for credit insurance throughout Continental Europe (excluding Spain and Portugal) and the units Bonding, Installment Credit Protection, Dutch State Business and Atradius Re. Schmidt most recently served as managing director and head of Credit Solutions Client Markets at Swiss Re. He will be based at the Atradius headquarters in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty in Munich hired Henning Haagen to head up the aviation reinsurance team of AGCS, the industrial insurance arm of Allianz SE. Previously, Haagen was responsible for underwriting aviation excess-of-loss at Augsburger Rück Kontor GmbH, an aviation reinsurance specialist in Augsburg, Germany.
Christer Pehrson joined Aon Re Global as executive director, focusing on its European-based global clients. Based in London, Pehrson was previously managing director of Guy Carpenter in New York and deputy head of its international department.
Gary Schmalzriedt was appointed chairman of Willis Re. Schmalzriedt has 40 years of international insurance management experience, most recently as chairman and CEO of ACE Overseas General before becoming an industry consultant in 2006. He joined ACE in 1999 as part of the acquisition of Cigna's International P/C operations and was named president and CEO of ACE Bermuda before moving to ACE Overseas General in 2003.
