Recognizing the Power of Brokers

Next month, Risk & Insurance® will publish its annual listings of Power Brokers--outstanding individual insurance brokers in 27 industry practice groups.

The 2007 list will be substantially expanded from the 2006 rankings. In each industry practice group, there is an opportunity to honor up to six brokers in each category. The listings will include pictures of every broker along with a short profile that will focus on the accomplishments of the broker during the past year.

There are six new industry categories: aviation/aerospace, chemicals, employee benefits consultants, sports and events, long-term health care and public entities. Brokers will be identified in a total of 27 industry sectors.

The focus in these listings is the individual brokers and their accomplishments. We looked at four critical factors: creativity, knowledge of the industry, client service and ethics. In addition, this year we focused on the broker's accomplishments during the past year rather than a broker's overall career.

Nominations were submitted by individual brokers or by their brokerage firms. To decide which brokers to honor, we talked with a panel of risk managers at companies within each industry sector. Also, we checked with every broker reference and sought to identify the strengths and weaknesses of brokers from those references.

In all, we talked or communicated with nearly 300 risk managers to help us decide upon the winners. Risk managers on the panel also had the option of nominating brokers in their categories. A team of 14 writers and editors contributed to the process. The issue is scheduled to be released in the middle of February. The winners, and their profiles, will also be posted on the Risk & Insurance® Web site at www.riskandinsurance.com.
