It's been a tough haul for reinsurance property brokers as they tried during the past year to meet the demands of cedents seeking additional coverage in the Southeast United States coastal zones. Meanwhile, although rates were rising for the U.S. coastal areas, European property rates eased. And then, as the year progressed without any hurricanes that did significant damage, capacity in the property markets began to open up and U.S. prices began to come off their highs.
With these kind of pressures, any property broker worth their salt these days must be especially skilled at analytics, especially CAT modeling. The game isn't reinsurance but really how to get the best use of capital. Christopher Royse, David Duffy and Thomas Johnson are part of the Guy Carpenter property team--well known among reinsurers for their technical proficiency and their ability to match the right risk with the right reinsurer.
Like the other property brokers, all these professionals understand the nature of the risk they seek to place and the demands of their clients. Kelly Smith has been cited by reinsurers and cedents alike as one of the premier property/catastrophe reinsurance brokers in the business. Scott Clark, executive vice president, heads up the property group for Aon in the United States.
The Benfield Group also gets high marks for its catastrophe analytical abilities and the property operations there are headed up by David Cameron, part of the well-respected Minneapolis office.
