Within the reinsurance markets, the facultative business is something of the odd-man out.The focus is usually on a single transaction and so the market is very transactional and not quite as concentrated on relationships.
These deals can be more difficult to present to reinsurers because they don't usually fit into some kind of standard analysis matrix, making underwriters question the information and the detail of the risks more aggressively. Frequently, a particular deal requires a large amount of analysis, imagination and probably more work on the individual deal by the broker.
There are facultative deals in almost all lines of the business. Reinsurers pointed to Guy Carpenter's facultative skills, specifically George Caricich and John O'Reilly, both from Carpenter's New York offices. Joseph Vitale heads up the Benfield Group facultative team. The team does both property and casualty facultative deals and Vitale also has handled other responsibilities including alternative risk issues.
Bill Kasbeer is the CEO of Chicago-based Aon Specialty Re, and heads up its facultative team. At Willis Re, Steven Giannone is known for the "fac" business and he's based in Chicago. The facultative team at JLT Re in New York was also mentioned by reinsurers.
