What is the portfolio makeup of the industry?

According to the National Council on Compensation Insurance, investment portfolio data for the property and casualty insurance industry has been relatively stable from year to year.

As of 2007, the most recent data available, private carriers had nearly $1.2 trillion in invested assets, 70 percent of which were in fixed income securities, with a little more than half in tax-exempt securities. Only about 20 percent of invested assets were in common and preferred stocks, of which, about 70 percent was in "unaffiliated" common stocks. Most of the balance was in case and other short-term investments. NCCI said these percentages have held relatively steady over time.
