Companies should prepare for the 'silver tsunami'

In addition to a variety of emerging health conditions, Ronald Loeppke said employers must take steps to address the aging workforce.

"The 'silver tsunami' is about to hit the beachhead of our health care system," he said. "The increased burden of chronic diseases will threaten the economic realities for our country. With what has occurred in the past year, employees are going to need to work later in life. So now, more than ever, it is important to deal with two fundamental issues -- improving the health of our workforce through prevention and focusing on quality of care for those with existing conditions."
