In the current recession, scarce resources and ongoing competitive pressures can make it difficult to survive, no less achieve innovative success. With the Responsibility Leader® designation, we add another level of acknowledgement to the achievements of our Risk Innovators.

The Responsibility Leader® designation highlights Risk Innovators whose achievements benefit their company's bottom line while also producing a positive impact on their fellow employees, customers and/or the community at-large. In order to achieve these benefits, many of our Responsibility Leaders® demonstrated a commitment to doing what was right instead of what was easy. The combination of their creativity, innovation and hard work shows the positive impact of combining business success with responsibility.

Elements of a Responsibility Leader® can be found in many of our Risk InnovatorsTM. After all, inherent in creativity and innovation is the ability to see outside the usual parameters and the need to often go beyond the call of duty. And yet, Responsibility Leaders® manage to stand apart from this outstanding group by combining all of the criteria for the designation into a unique, pragmatic solution. We detail our winner's responsibility leadership achievements adjacent to the profiles of their innovations.

The 2009 Responsibility Leaders® are:

-- John A. Martin, CEO, Pension Benefit Insurance Services Inc., Sparta, N.J. (Financial)

-- Jane Keegan, risk manager, Port of Oakland, Oakland, Calif. (Transportation)

-- Ernie Machado, risk manager, Foster Farms, Livingston, Calif. (Manufacturing)

-- Dr. Nathan Cope, chief medical officer, Paradigm Management Services, Concord, Calif. (Healthcare)

-- Kent E. Paul, CEO, AMERIND Risk Management Corp., Santa Ana Pueblo, N.M. (Public Entity)

To help us identify our Responsibility Leaders®, we assembled a panel of judges who reviewed the Risk InnovatorTM winners to select this special group.
