Experts believe it is too early to tell whether these rulings will become a trend across the country, but employers are concerned about being held financially responsible for employees' gastric bypass surgeries.
In addition, research has called into question the benefits of paying for these surgeries. According to a study by The Conference Board, while obese employees medically eligible for bariatric surgery (about 9 percent of the workforce) have sharply higher obesity-related medical costs and absenteeism, many companies are unlikely to recoup surgery costs before these employees leave for other jobs.
