Pirates attacked two vessels off the coast of Somalia on Monday--one, a fertilizer-carrying cargo ship in the Indian Ocean and the other, a chemical tanker in the Gulf of Aden. The latter was the first ship hijacked in the gulf in six months. All this despite the fact that an international naval flotilla is patrolling the area. These two attacks take the 2009 total off Somalia to 214, with 47 of them leading to a hijacking. In 2008, pirates targeted 111 vessels and hijacked 42.
