Narcotics and drug dependence
The study by the National Council on Compensation Insurance found that heavy narcotics use for workers' compensation injuries is related to substance abuse treatments.
According to researchers, one of the potential serious adverse effects of prolonged narcotics use is drug dependence. The study investigated the relationship between the number of narcotic prescriptions and substance abuse treatments. Since substance abuse treatments are not restricted to narcotics alone, researchers noted that an unmeasurable portion of these treatments may be for nonnarcotic substances. However, the study concluded that the relationship between high narcotics use and substance abuse treatments, for whatever substance, is undeniable.
