Cigna targets obesity through workplace weight-loss challenge

Officials at Cigna are touting the success of a corporate wellness program that saw nearly one-third of its U.S. employees lose a collective 20,000 pounds over the course of 10 weeks.

In the Shape Up CIGNA Healthy Life Team Challenge, 8,600 employees formed 1,100 teams to compete in one of two categories -- physical activity or weight loss. In addition to the 10 tons of weight that was lost, employees logged 15.9 million minutes of physical activity.

Jodi Prohofsky, senior vice president of health management operations and executive sponsor of the challenge, said this was one example of the programs and resources the company offers to help improve the health and wellness of employees, increase productivity, reduce absenteeism, and lower medical costs. For these efforts, the National Business Group on Health recently honored Cigna with a platinum award for its commitment to promoting a healthy workplace.
