Cost of treating chronic pain

The Rosomoff Comprehensive Pain Center program, which often consists of several weeks of inpatient care followed by months of evaluation and rehabilitation, isn't cheap.

Dr. Fernando Branco, medical director of the center, said the cost for the specialized care, however, is a mere fraction of what an insurance company would ultimately shell out for medical, disability, and litigation costs over the lifetime of a disabled chronic pain sufferer.

"We are one of the few facilities in the country that can take care of real catastrophic chronic pain patients," he said. "They refer patients here to decrease the long-standing price tag. It makes a huge difference for a patient who is only 40 years old and is already taking thousands of dollars each month in narcotics."
