Know your medical providers

Finding the best medical providers is not a matter of luck, according to Denise Algire, a New Mexico-based registered nurse and practice leader of Integrated Health and Productivity Management for the Risk Navigation Group. She says you need to be proactive.

"It is absolutely a grassroots, organic approach," she said. "You can't manage by saying, 'OK, let's get a panel and just see what happens.' You have to hand select providers."

That can be challenging in rural areas where few providers may be available. In that case, Algire suggests partnering with area providers and educating them about the approach you want them to take.

"Hammering them over the head won't work," Algire said. "You have to have a relationship approach."
