Tips for using social media effectively
Shelley Cohen, owner of Health Resources Unlimited, a professional development company in the health care field, offered her thoughts about how employers can best use social media tools.
In a recent blog posting, she suggested employers keep in mind the following when using social media to examine off-duty conduct:
- Don't do things on an ad hoc basis -- make a formal decision, with specific policies, on whether to use social networking sites.
- Assure consistency -- either check everyone in a particular category or no one.
- Always consider discriminatory concerns when making the decision to review sites.
Be sure you're up on the relevant decisions involving the impact of off-duty conduct on human resources decisions. Social media will drive new legislative efforts to protect privacy, but until then be fair, ethical, and honest.
