The proposed revisions include modifying the medical billing and payment guide and electronic medical billing and payment companion guide. They require the use of the national standards that will be mandatory under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act in 2012 for electronic billing transactions and pharmaceutical electronic billings. The medical billing and payment guide will go into effect 90 days after the rule is adopted, and the electronic medical billing and payment companion guide will go into effect 18 months after the rule is adopted.
