"The PreVent" National Employee Injury Prevention Award honors an organization that has devoted significant time and resources to developing and implementing proactive strategies and programs for preventing workplace injuries and providing a safer work environment for an employer's greatest asset: its people.

We seek to recognize a truly innovative organization that has evolved beyond "reactive" accident reduction tactics, and embodies a proactive injury prevention philosophy and culture, extending far beyond traditional safety and loss control programs.

Presented in conjunction with the Risk & Insurance® Theodore Roosevelt Workers' Compensation and Disability Management Awards (Teddy Awards), the PreVent Award candidate is judged based on established core Teddy Award criteria in addition to the following:

Total Injury Prevention Focus

Proactive injury prevention starts with recognizing all potential sources of workplace injuries. The wear and tear on workers from sub-optimal equipment, inefficient or redundant work-flow, excessive repetitive motions, poor body mechanics and/or ergonomics, etc. can cause an infinitely higher number of injuries than more commonly identified hazards such as slippery floors or bladed tools.

Risk Assessment

In order to identify all the sources of injuries within an organization, it is necessary to identify and assess all the potential risks that can contribute to injuries. Equipment, ergonomics, work-flow, management philosophy, employee training, individual physical capability, limitations and overall conditioning can all contribute to greater injury risk. We are interested in comprehensive and continuous risk-assessment strategies and programs that can be adapted seamlessly as an organization grows and changes.

Proactive Approach

Considering that a combination of risk factors and conditions often contribute to workplace injuries, the strategies to address those risks must be equally comprehensive. Loss control requires organizations to react, to address and learn from individual incidents or losses. Safety often focuses on reducing or eliminating accidents such as slips and falls or cuts and abrasions. Prevention, however, should be a process of bringing the whole of the organization into alignment with common injury prevention goals that have a broader proactive focus along with safety and loss control.

Truly proactive injury prevention programs utilize a broad spectrum of strategies and programs to minimize potential injuries across an entire enterprise. We are interested in the quality of the individual strategies or approaches, specific program tactics, accountabilities and organizational integration and ultimately the effectiveness of the entire program. Special consideration is given to injury prevention programs that are highly creative and employ innovative solutions through a collaboration of people and technology.

To apply, please download and complete the PreVent Award application. The application is for both the Teddy Award and the PreVent Award. If you only want to apply for the PreVent, please complete just questions 11 through 13 in addition to your contact information.
