Massachusetts: Department defines use of massage therapy

The Department of Industrial Accidents clarified the use of massage therapy in the treatment of injured workers in hospital settings as well as outpatient settings.

Massage not performed in conjunction with a covered procedure is not considered a medical service subject to utilization review regulations. The guidelines do not recognize massage therapy as a stand-alone treatment for injured workers. Payment for treatment provided by massage therapists is at the discretion of the insurer or self-insurer.
