A Salute to Capt. Fouché

Lori Dickerson Fouché, president and CEO of Fireman's Fund, has her job cut out for her.

She's at the tail end of a long dousing period, extinguishing the embers of smoldering brush fires at the venerable Novato, Calif.-based property/casualty carrier.

Fouché's spent the last ten months returning the company to what it does best: offering personal insurance for high net worth individuals, and commercial coverage for small and midsize commercial accounts.

Wisely, she's steering clear of using agents and brokers to push into the mass market, and instead used the "high touch" distribution channel to sell niche products.

With her arrival, the revolving door that the corner office had become -- five CEOs in six years -- has screeched to a halt.

Armed with a gold-plated education reinforced with years of experience at Chubb, Fouchéhas the chance to run a property/casualty company, and analysts have so far given their nod of approval with her plan to get out of the business of being everything to everyone.

More than her day-to-day responsibilities, she represents a new generation of young industry leaders.

Still in her 40s, and a descendant of the first African-American lawyers in Illinois, Fouché's at the leading edge of Generation X.

Her job won't be easy. She's faced with growing a company in a lukewarm economy, and in a marketplace where there are simply fewer people than the 80-million strong baby boomers who are retiring.

Fouchéis confident she can lead the company to where it needs to go, and we're sure she's up to the job.
