Michigan: Comp agency OKs electronic payments

The Workers' Compensation Agency enacted a new rule allowing workers to receive workers' compensation payments made by electronic transfer.

The worker must consent to and authorize in writing the use of electronic transfer payments. The electronic transfer can be made by direct deposit or electronic transfer to the worker's account or his dependent's account or the issuance of a debit card to the worker or his dependent. When the worker is represented by counsel, accrued compensation must be made payable by check to the person entitled to compensation and mailed to the attorney. A worker can make a request in writing to change the method of receiving payments at any time. The rule went into effect on March 4. For a copy of the rule, visit www.michigan.gov/documents/wca/wca_rule408.48_413293_7.pdf.
