Corporate risk operations manager Julia Sfurm has had extensive experience working with unions and said it was not a problem.
"I find you can't have the mentality of 'them and us,'" she said. "It has to be a more cohesive relationship."
Working on both the employer and TPA sides during her career, Sfurm has found working with unions is no more difficult than working with any employees. "They are employees and want to do the right thing," she said.
Sfurm said one of Elkay's facilities is in a state that is aggressive in terms of its unions. By including them in all major decisions, the company has had good success.
"They know we are looking out for the employee. Safety is our culture," Sfurm said. "It's OK to be profitable too. They are aware there is production, but we need to work safely."
