Insurer awarded patent to ID best doctors
A patent was issued in May for Accident Fund's invention described as "a method and system for evaluating medical service providers, and before or after an initial medical service provider visit by a claimant, determining whether to direct that claimant on subsequent medical service provider visits to a different medical service provider to optimize efficiency of care and minimize cost at the claim level."
The company sought the patent to protect its own intellectual property, said Patrick J. Walsh, vice president and chief claims officer, corporate claims, Accident Fund Holdings Inc. In addition to identifying experienced physicians and partnering them with injured workers based on their injuries, the system marketed as Care Analytics also has components that deal with early detection of unwanted or abnormal prescribing patterns associated with Schedule II narcotics -- "additional tools that came out of this original technology that got the patent," he said. "We came up with other ideas to leverage the data."
