The word professionalism is used quite a bit. But what does it mean?
In the person of Steve Festa, the subject of our cover story in this issue, it means several things.
For one, it means being punctual. Those who know him well say that when Steve Festa calls a meeting for 2 p.m., that's when the meeting starts, not one minute before, not one minute after. Punctuality isn't obsessive behavior, it's thoughtful behavior.
In insurance, professionalism means accessing the right data before making a decision. As a claims professional, Festa is data-driven. He analyzes data carefully before making a decision. That's true not only of the claims his department manages, but in how his department functions.
It means being ethical. We end up living and dying as professionals on our reputations, do we not? Steve's ethics are one of his strongest points, sources say.
When we talked to Steve in July, he was a senior vice president and chief claims officer for EMPLOYERS Holdings Inc.
A month later, he was named executive vice president and chief operating officer. Congratulations to Steve on his dedication to professionalism and on his promotion.
