The American Society of Business Publication Editors honored Risk & Insurance®with one of its top prizes for design at its 27th annual Awards of Excellence competition, which took place on June 21 at Cleveland's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. The staff of Risk & Insurance®, along with its design consultants Iridium Group, took gold in the "Publication Redesign" category for magazines with circulations under 80,000.

As readers surely remember, the magazine pulled off the switch between the April 1 and April 15, 2004, issues. As Editor-in-Chief Jack Roberts describes the renovation, "The new design gives Risk & Insurance® a more compelling appeal.

"The magazine comes across as more contemporary," he says, "and reflects the increasing importance of risk in today's business culture. It's also more legible, especially for folks like me." Roberts puts on his glasses and examines the page. "For example, we increased the size of the body type."

In weighing the entries, ASBPE judges awarded publications for the originality and relevance of their new layout, content and composition, and the play of typography, graphics and photography. The ease with which the new layout conveyed its message and information to the reader was also measured.

The ASBPE has honored the dedication and innovation of trade-publication editors and graphic designers for more than 20 years. The Awards of Excellence program is one of the most competitive and prestigious in the business for print editorial and graphics and publication-associated Web sites.

In 2005, 431 magazines and 183 companies submitted entries, crossing their fingers for awards like Magazine of the Year, the Stephen Barr Award for the year's best feature writing, new publication design and best e-newsletter.
