Are You a Risk Innovator?

Introducing a new award program focused on innovation and excellence in risk management. Applications now being accepted, and the deadline has been extended.

Program Summary

We are looking to identify key individuals who see risk differently and can resolve risk-related problems in a unique or innovative way. They view risk not only as a threat, but also as an opportunity for their organizations. The Risk Innovator Award will recognize between 60 and 100 winners in 20 different industries who have, in the past year, demonstrated innovation and excellence in risk management. From these winners, a separate panel of judges will choose up to eight individuals who also qualify for the Responsibility Leader designation, sponsored by Liberty Mutual.

Eligible Applicants/Nominees

Any individual responsible for managing risk in or for an organization, including but not limited to:

-- Risk Manager

-- Chief Risk Officer

-- CEO

-- General Counsel

-- CFO

-- Broker (especially for companies without a full-time risk executive)

-- Consultant

-- Claims Manager

-- Educators & Researchers working on risk management issues

-- Safety Director

-- HR/Benefits Manager

Application/Nomination Process

Applications are accepted directly from eligible individuals who would like to be considered for this award. Applicants must complete the entire application form.

Nominations are welcomed from anyone who knows an individual meeting the criteria for this award. To nominate someone, complete the nomination portion of the application form. Risk & Insurance® will contact the nominee to confirm the nomination and get the additional information necessary.

The Application/Nomination Form is designed to get a brief overview of the accomplishment and collect pertinent background information. It is purposefully simple to encourage entries. Editors and staff members of Risk & Insurance® will follow up with applicants to gather details & supporting materials throughout the process.

Applicants and nominees for the Risk Innovator Award are welcome from U.S. and foreign-based companies. Responsibility Leaders will be chosen only from individuals working in the U.S.

Completed applications and nominations are due to Risk & Insurance® by midnight on July 15, 2008. Winners will be featured in the September 15th issue of Risk & Insurance® magazine.

Liberty Mutual employees are not eligible for the Risk Innovator Award.

Selection Process

The judging will take place in two steps. First, the judges will select the Risk Innovator Award winners: 60-100 individuals across 20 different industries. Next, a separate panel of judges will choose candidates that meet the criteria for the Responsibility Leader designation. The editors of Risk & Insurance will then select up to eight Responsibility Leaders.

Industry Categories

We know that different industries define risk innovation and excellence differently. Recognizing that there are different approaches, Risk & Insurance® will award three to five winners in each of these 20 categories:

Higher Education

Real Estate

Chemicals

Insurance

Retail/Wholesale

Construction

Investment

Sports-Entertainment

Energy

Manufacturing

Technology

Financial Services/Institutions

Marine

Transportation

Gaming/Hospitality

Pharmaceuticals/Life Sciences

Utilities

Healthcare

Public Sector

Risk Innovator Award Criteria

Emerging Risk Identification:

-- Identifying a risk that was either unknown or overlooked and developing a unique and practical solution to address it.

-- Achievements can range from identifying a new process or application that presented a formerly unknown liability issues to the discovery of a safety hazard that wasn't previously anticipated to using statistical analysis to identify emerging risks.

Strategic Risk Utilization:

-- Demonstrating how risk analysis can lead to the development of practical solutions that can improve business performance.

-- Achievement should discern opportunity in a risk such as finding that adopting new environmental controls results not only in gaining a competitive advantage in the marketplace but also, in reducing the potential cost of environmental compliance.

Creative Risk Mitigation:

-- Developing out-of-the-ordinary solutions that demonstrate the individual's ability to bring innovative, but also practical, thought and analysis to solving a particular problem.

-- Solutions can range from the simple to the complex--ranging from the adoption of a process or approach to safety to implementing new technology, new management techniques or undertaking a reorganization.

-- Achievements can be from any area of risk management--from loss control and prevention, to analytics, placement and the development of unique mitigation strategies.

Criteria for Responsibility Leader

Responsibility Leaders will be chosen from the Risk Innovator Award winners based on the following criteria:

-- Developed a unique and practical solution that not only benefited the Risk Innovator's business, but also its employees and/or the community.

-- Did the right thing over the easy thing to overcome any obstacles in successfully implementing this solution.
