DR. JOHN ESSLINGER was named medical director for Lockton Benefit Group, the employee benefits consulting branch of Lockton Cos. Esslinger will be counted on to provide his knowledge of health management, newborn child care and wellness to employers and their employee groups. Esslinger had been medical director for WellCare Health Plans in Atlanta and Tampa, Fla., for the last four years.

President TOM MCDONOUGH of Coventry Health Care Inc., the managed care giant, announced his retirement, effective July 1, according to a filing with the Securities Exchange Commission. McDonough started with Coventry in 10 years ago and is credited in part with the company's success. Coventry has not publicly announcement his replacement.

HealthExtras Inc. announced that HAI TRAN will be replacing Michael P. Donovan as of July 1 as the pharmacy benefits management company's chief financial officer. Tran comes by way of Hangar Orthopedic Group Inc., a prosthetic device provider based in Bethesda, Md., where he was vice president and treasurer.
