ANTHONY F. MARKEL was elected vice chairman of Markel Corp by the board of directors. Markel has been associated with the corporation for more than four decades. Since 1992, he had served as president and chief operating officer. In a press release about the election, CEO and Chairman of the Board Alan I. Kirshner said that the new role relates to the implementation of succession planning at Markel Corp.
Markel Corp. also announced that PAUL W. SPRINGMAN
was named the new president and chief operating officer. Springman most recently was executive vice president with Markel, a position he held since 2002. Before that, he was president and chief operating officer at Shand Morahan & Co. Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary.
F. MARSHALL TURNER was named president and CEO of Maxum Indemnity Co. and Maxum Casualty Insurance Co., as well as head of management for the Maxum Specialty Insurance Group, effective May 5. Turner will also serve as director of both Maxum companies and their parent, Northern Homelands Co. He replaces Gene G. Gopon, who was serving as interim CEO for six months after the death of Joseph Lughes. Turner has more than 28 years in the industry, including as president of AXIS Insurance.
BART SCHWARTZ was announced as executive vice president, chief legal officer and secretary of specialty insurer Assurant Inc., effective Apr. 28. He will be responsible for internal audit functions, government relations, compliance and legal. His predecessor, Jerome A. Atkinson, is transition toward retirement on July 1. Schwartz, 55, comes by way of The Bank of New York, where he was chief governance officer, corporate secretary and chief securities counsel.
DAN TUCKER was hired as vice president of life sales for Partners Advantage Insurance Services LLC, an independent life insurance marketing organization. Tucker will be responsible for developing strategic sales and marketing relationships with independent life insurance agents and delivering marketing and promotional programs. He has more than 15 years of national life insurance marketing background, including as senior vice president of Professional Planners Marketing Group.
CNA Financial Corp. announced that it hired LARRY A. HAEFNER as chief actuary of its insurance subsidiaries. Haefner has more than 25 years of actuarial and operations experience, most recently at Travelers, where he was chief actuary for middle market commercial accounts, construction, technology, public sector, excess casualty, global accounts, and oil & gas.
LORIANN LOWERY was appointed the new president of Lloyd's North America. She is responsible for business operations in Canada and the United States, effective April 27. Lowery had been at Wells Fargo Insurance Services Inc. as national practice leader and managing director of risk management and financial products.
